Obecnie w USA każdego roku powstaje 21 TWh energii z biogazu. Tymczasem Amerykańska Rada Biogazu (ABC) szacuje, że pełen potencjał kraju to 255 TWh rocznie. Jak wylicza organizacja, przy maksymalnym scenariuszu rozwoju sektora powstawałaby ilość energii elektrycznej mogąca zasilić 23,7 mln domów, czyli prawie wszystkie gospodarstwa domowe w Teksasie i Kalifornii łącznie. Podobnie wykorzystanie pełnego potencjału biometanu zapewniłoby wystarczającą ilość paliwa dla 40,4 mln pojazdów rocznie. To wszystkie samochody w Kalifornii, Teksasie, Florydzie, Nowym Jorku i Pensylwanii razem wziętych.
Currently, 21 TWh of energy is generated from biogas in the USA each year. However, the American Biogas Council (ABC) estimates the country’s full potential at 255 TWh annually. According to the organization’s calculations, a maximum-growth scenario for the sector would generate enough electricity to power 23.7 million homes—equivalent to nearly all households in Texas and California combined. Similarly, harnessing the full potential of biomethane would provide enough fuel for 40.4 million vehicles annually—more than the total number of cars in California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania combined. There are currently 2,500 biogas plants operating in the USA, whereas the potential exists for as many as 17,000 installations. Iowa holds the greatest potential in terms of the number of facilities, as 85% of its land is used for agriculture; the state could host 2,900 biogas plants capable of powering 23% of all homes in the state.
